Ubuntu Install

Installed as recommended and when Wireshark starts up get:

Couldn't run /usr/bin/dumpcap in child process: Permission denied

~$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:    Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS
Release:    12.04
Codename:   precise

What does ls -l /usr/bin/dumpcap print?

Did you issue those commands?

  • sudo addgroup -system wireshark
  • sudo chown root:wireshark /usr/bin/dumpcap
  • sudo setcap cap_net_raw,cap_net_admin=eip /usr/bin/dumpcap
  • sudo usermod -a -G wireshark YOUR_USER_NAME

Hello

Used:

sudo apt-get install wireshark
sudo groupadd wireshark
sudo usermod -a -G wireshark YOUR_USER_NAME
sudo chgrp wireshark /usr/bin/dumpcap
sudo chmod 750 /usr/bin/dumpcap
sudo setcap cap_net_raw,cap_net_admin=eip /usr/bin/dumpcap
sudo getcap /usr/bin/dumpcap
