Hi, I am new to the sniffing tool.I just downloaded wireshark on my system I am not able to see the interface list and, in capture option after giving eth0 in the interface field if i say start it says that "capture session could not be initiated(You don't have permission to capture on device) ". I tried sudo command also. But I get the error message saying "sorry, the user cant execute". Please help me. asked 10 Nov '14, 01:03 tej edited 11 Nov '14, 02:49 grahamb ♦ showing 5 of 8 show 3 more comments |
What is your OS?
Have you read the Wiki page on Capture Privileges?
I am using unix.
Ya I read it. it says for unix i should start as admin. but i dont have that permission. is their any other way forward for this problem?
If you can be more specific as to the exact version of Unix you are using, then maybe more help can be offered.
Thank you for response.the version of unix is :
LSB Version: core-2.0-noarch:core-3.2-noarch:core-4.0-noarch:core-2.0-x86_64:core-3.2-x86_64:core-4.0-x86_64:desktop-4.0-amd64:desktop-4.0-noarch:graphics-2.0-amd64:graphics-2.0-noarch:graphics-3.2-amd64:graphics-3.2-noarch:graphics-4.0-amd64:graphics-4.0-noarch Distributor ID: SUSE LINUX Description: SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 (x86_64) Release: 11 Codename: n/a
Not entirely sure about SUSE 11, but I think you should be looking at the Capture Privileges section entitled "Other Linux based systems or other installation methods"
try adding your user to the root group..... maybe this helps you out
I found the answer.Actually, i can't login as a root user in the hub I work. so its impossible for me to use wireshark . but i can do it on virtual box. Anyways, thank you :)
