SCTP [association index]

How does wireshark knows what is the association index? how is it calculated? from what I understand, this is not part of packet Bytes.

The association index is a value generated by Wireshark itself, hence the square brackets.

It is derived from the ports and verification tags in the packets. For the exact details you could review the dissector code.
