Have you tried google "maximum number of retransmissions in tcp" ?

e.g. Windows OSes have a default of 5 maximum Retransmissions if not otherwise configured under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\Tcpip\\Parameters
